WAR OF THE WORLDS: The Greatest Halloween Prank Ever #WeirdDarkness

It was exactly 80-years ago today… on October 30, 1938 that American history was changed forever by a prank. Most of the 6 million people who turned into 23-year-old Orson Welles’ adaption of the H.G. Wells sci-fi classic “War of the Worlds” realized that it was a drama. However, because of the realistic news bulletin format, many thousands of listeners believed that aliens had actually landed in the small town of Grover’s Mill, New Jersey. Even in those days before Facebook and Twitter, the reaction was immediate. Listeners all across the country began calling their local newspapers and radio stations for updates, while National Guardsmen in New Jersey were calling their armories to find out if they needed to report for duty. After the broadcast, thousands of letters were sent to Welles from listeners, as well as to the FCC, complaining about the show. And Welles, who had already made a name for himself on the New York stage, became an overnight success. Just three years later, he would create a masterpiece with “Citizen Kane” and become a legend. And it all started with a radio show…
