“The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” by Robert Louis Stevenson, narrated by Darren Marlar
Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is an 1886 Gothic novella by Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson. It follows Gabriel John Utterson, a London-based legal practitioner who investigates a series of strange occurrences between his old friend, Dr Henry Jekyll, and a murderous criminal named Edward Hyde.  “Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde” is one of the most famous pieces of English literature, and is considered to be a defining book of the gothic horror genre. The novella has also had a sizable impact on popular culture, with the phrase “Jekyll and Hyde” being used in vernacular to refer to people with an outwardly good but sometimes shockingly evil nature.

Algernon Blackwood’s novella, “The Willows”, was originally published as part of Blackwood’s 1907 collection “The Listener and Other Stories”. “Blowups Happen” by Robert Heinlein, narrated by Darren Marlar
This is a 1940 science fiction short story by American writer Robert A. Heinlein. The story describes the tensions among the staff of a nuclear reactor. Heinlein’s concept of a nuclear reactor was one of a barely contained explosion, not the steady-state thermal plants developed later. As a consequence the work is dangerous, and the slightest mistake could be catastrophic. All the technical staff are monitored by psychologists who have the authority to remove them from the work at any time lest they crack under the pressure and precipitate a disaster. The monitoring itself contributes to the problem.

Boston, 1926. Francis Thurston goes through documents left behind by his grandfather’s brother, recently deceased under mysterious circumstances. He soon discovers the existence of a cult that worships ancient and unspeakable horrors. Mysterious murders, blood rituals in the depths of the Louisiana swamps, artists who descend into insanity after nightmarish visions, and a Cyclopean city that rises from the sea. Step by step, Thurston realizes that his relative’s research got too close to the truth. In the shadows, there are those who want to wake the sleeping god Cthulhu in order to spread madness and destruction over the entire world. The stars are right. Is the end near?

“Cycle of The Werewolf” by Stephen King, narrated by Darren Marlar
(AKA “Silver Bullet”) Terror began in January—by the light of the full moon.  The first scream came from the snowbound railwayman who felt the werewolf’s fangs ripping at his throat. The next month there was a scream of ecstatic agony from the woman attacked in her cozy bedroom. Now scenes of unbelievable horror unfold each time the full moon shines on the isolated Maine town of Tarker’s Mills. No one knows who will be attacked next. But one thing is sure. When the full moon rises, a paralyzing fear sweeps through Tarker’s Mills. For snarls that sound like human words can be heard whining through the wind. And all around are the footprints of a monster whose hunger cannot be sated.

Edgar Allan Poe invented the modern mystery story, mostly invented science fiction, and was the first writer to take the horror stories of the Gothic era and set them in modern times, starting a trend that continues today. With a lifelong interest in Poe, Troy Taylor takes his own look at the mysterious and macabre writer, his tragic life, unexplained death, and lingering hauntings. He invites you along to delve into the strange and bizarre world of Edgar Allan Poe, from his early life to his tragic marriage, his insane grief, his dramatically failed career, his links to an unsolved murder, and the mystery of what happened to the writer in the five days before his unexplained death. And, perhaps strangest of all, does he haunt the mysterious graveyard where his body is buried? This is a tale of mystery and madness, real-life horror, and the supernatural, and it’s a book that you don’t want to miss!

There have been monsters among us lurking in the darkest corners of America, preying on children since the first settlers arrived on our shores. They have always been with us, stalking the innocent, from the days of the original colonies, to the Gilded Age, the Depression, and beyond. These monsters are not the stuff of fiction. They are bloodcurdlingly real, and they still walk among us, always looking for their next victim. In this chilling book by author Troy Taylor shines a light on the darkest tales of horror and hauntings from American history and presents a terrifying collection of dark crimes perpetrated against our most tender victims – our children. His most disturbing book yet includes nightmarish tales from the 19th century – when the “good old days” were never good – like the Monster of the North Wood, the Pocasset Horror and the Girl in the Cellar, and continues into the modern day with accounts of the Kluxen Woods, America’s first school massacre, Wineville Chicken Coop Murders, “Babes of Inglewood”, Suzanne Degnan, the Girl Scout Camp Massacre, the “perfect murder” of Bobby Franks, and many more. Be warned: This is not a book for the faint of heart. These are tales contain some brutal, agonizing, and terrifying scenes of horror. It is not for those easily disturbed, and if you are bothered by the subject of this book, then it is not the book for you. Seriously, don’t listen to it. And don’t say we didn’t warn you.

Theodore Roosevelt has a complicated legacy. To some, he was the quintessential American patriot and hero, a valiant soldier and hawkish leader. Others remember him as the Progressive cultural icon, the trust-buster who split from the Republican Party.  So who was the real Teddy Roosevelt?  Daniel Ruddy’s new biography cuts through the impenetrable tangle of misconceptions and contradictions that have grown up over the last century and obscured our view of a man who remains one of the most controversial and misunderstood presidents in US history. Weighing Roosevelt’s lifetime of actions against his sometimes contradictory Progressive rhetoric, Ruddy paints a portrait of a man who led by undeniably conservative principles, but who obfuscated his own legacy with populist speeches. By focusing on Roosevelt’s actions and his effect on American history, Ruddy clears the cobwebs and presents a real and convincing case for remembering Theodore Roosevelt as a great conservative leader.
