“Ghost Stories Haunt Sale of Adele’s Former Mansion”

A sprawling historic mansion in the English countryside can’t find a buyer after its famous former tenant, Adele, called it ‘quite scary’.

A large house in West Sussex, England, known as Lock House, is struggling to find a buyer. The owner says she attributes it to the world-renowned singer Adele having once lived there and mentioning it being spooky.

Adele lived in the house, which was once a convent, for six months. In 2012, she showcased the house on American television (CBS) and said it was “quite scary,” although she never exactly said it was haunted. But some newspapers wrote stories that said she believed there were ghosts in the place.

But this ghost story isn’t a joke — it’s giving the owner actual headaches. They can’t sell the big 10-bedroom house, which is set on lovely grounds with deer and tall trees.

The house was built in the early 1900s. It was attached to a ballroom in 1940 and, in the 1970s, was converted into a convent, where nuns lived. The current owner purchased the home in 2003 and has made plenty of lovely updates, including a movie room, pool and tennis court.

The owner has attempted to sell the house for 14 years. They tried everything from taking nice pictures to put ads in magazines to showing it to a whole bunch of people. In 2020, it had one interested buyer, but they backed out after hearing ghost stories.

Now, having failed to sell the entire place, the owner is seeking permission to divide it up into three houses and a cottage.

When Adele was interviewed inside the house, she simply said it was “a bit scary” because it used to be the former site of a convent. When the interviewer dropped a mention of the horror film “The Shining,” Adele simply quoted a signature line from the movie. Adele never said she heard strange noises in the house, that came later from a newspaper called The Sun.
