Government-Approved Sasquatch: The 1975 Atlas That Made Bigfoot Official
In an expensive government atlas meant to document Washington state’s wildlife and geography, there’s an unexpected official entry that treats Bigfoot as just another local resident.
In 1975, the US Army Corps of Engineers released a thick tome titled The Washington Environmental Atlas. It took several years to produce this book, which cost $200,000 to produce. It was filled with information about Washington state’s wildlife, environment and geography, with maps and pictures and diagrams. The book had everything, from plants and ancient sites to rivers and forests.
But the book contained something odd that still baffles folks today. The authors even included a whole section about Bigfoot in the wildlife section. They wrote of Bigfoot as if it were a real animal that lives in Washington state. They did say that not everyone believes in Bigfoot, but it’s strange that a state government would mention the cryptid at all in a non-fiction publication.
Hairs that were thought to be from a Bigfoot were tested by the FBI. These hairs matched no known animal, according to the book. The authors provided detailed descriptions of how Bigfoot allegedly looks, even discussing the size of its feet (based on footprints cast) and what its face most likely resembles. They even wrote about similar strange beings that people alleged to have witnessed in Russia.
No one really knows why a serious (and expensive) state atlas would place Bigfoot with real animals. The authors appeared to be aware that it was a strange choice — they even inserted a cartoon (below) on the same page to mock their decision of including the creature in the book.
