Indian Man Falsely Pronounced Dead by Government Turns to Crime as Last Resort to Prove He’s Alive
An Indian man wrongly pronounced dead by the government turns to crime as a last resort to prove that he is, in fact, alive.
Government officials—a bureaucratic euphemism for elected representatives—pronounced Bhil dead some years back. Pleas were made to men in high places and by way of written petitions, but all to no avail. So what could he do?
Realizing that his property would be confiscated by the government after he “died,” the man at last decided to engage in some big trouble as a way of calling attention to his problem. He grabbed a knife wrapped in a large handkerchief and some petrol from his home and entered Chuli Bera Dharana School. He stopped class immediately.
At Chuli Bera Dharana School, the desperate man seriously injured two teachers—acting Headmaster Hardayal and teacher Suresh Kumar—as well as one parent.
Attempts by police to negotiate with Baburam Bhil made no progress until help arrived and he was arrested. According to a police report, Bhil also took some students and teachers hostage but was apprehended before the situation could escalate further.
With an air of calm authority surrounded by children, the interrogated man from Rajasthan disclosed that he had been wrongly declared dead. After failing every time to get his death certificate canceled, he was desperate to show that he was alive. He was pinning his hopes on getting arrested for serious enough crimes, which would force police to arrest him and write his name down on the sheet as living proof that he wasn’t really dead at all.
The guilty party, Baburam Bhil, has been taken into custody, although his plan may just work. Police have announced that they will investigate his assertions with a view to arresting and arraigning those found guilty.
Interestingly, the 40-year-old man is not the only one with such problems in India. Vio News reported last November that a 70-year-old was seen walking down Agra’s main street wearing a placard that said, “I am alive” after his death certificate was wrongly issued.
