The Universe’s Perfect Balance: Is It Evidence for God?

Dr. Willie Soon claims the universe is too perfectly tuned for life to be an accident—suggesting mathematical proof of a divine creator.

Harvard scientist Dr. Willie Soon has said he found mathematical evidence that proves God’s existence. Dr. Soon has recently been talking about the so-called “fine-tuning argument” (the notion that the universe’s physical laws appear almost perfectly calibrated for life to exist).
A central part of Dr. Soon’s argument has to do with matter and antimatter. After the Big Bang (the moment of the universe’s birth), matter and antimatter was formed. But our universe now has far more matter than antimatter.
This is important, because if equal quantities existed, they would annihilate each other entirely. The simple fact that they don’t exist in equal measure indicates to Dr. Soon that the universe may have been designed this way on purpose.
Dr. Soon invoked the work of Paul Dirac, a renowned physicist who in 1928 predicted antimatter’s existence via a mathematical equation. Among other things, Dirac married Einstein’s beloved E=mc² with another key relationship to describe how particles move.
In his later years, Dirac would explain that “God is a mathematician of a very high order,” given the highly ordered mathematical nature of the universe.
Other scientists have noted a number of “settings” in the universe that seem finely tuned too:

  • Gravity: If it were even a little weaker, galaxies and stars couldn’t form. If even a little stronger it could lead the universe to collapse.
  • The mass ratio of protons to electrons: If this ratio was even slightly different, complex molecules such as DNA could never exist.
  • The cosmological constant: This regulates how quickly the universe expands. Life could not exist if this number were anything other that what it is currently.

Dr. Soon believes that these finely tuned conditions indicate that the universe was purposely created rather than developed haphazardly.
