THE VATICAN’S COSMIC SECRET: Does The Catholic Church Hold The Truth About UFOs?
For centuries, the Vatican has guarded its secrets—but could one of them be proof that we’re not alone in the universe?

In the shadows of Vatican City’s ancient walls, beyond the tourist-filled St. Peter’s Square, lies a repository of knowledge so vast and secretive that it has fueled speculation for centuries. The Vatican Apostolic Library and its even more mysterious counterpart, the Vatican Secret Archives, house over 75,000 historical codices and an estimated 1.1 million ancient printed books spanning more than 53 miles of shelving. But what cosmic secrets might these hallowed halls contain?
Award-winning filmmaker and UFOlogist Mark Christopher Lee believes the answer is clear: evidence of extraterrestrial contact that could reshape humanity’s understanding of its place in the universe. And he’s making an urgent appeal to the newly elected Pope Leo to bring these secrets into the light.
“With new data emerging from NASA, private space agencies, and whistleblowers in the intelligence community, it is no longer a question of ‘if’ but ‘when’ we make contact with intelligent life beyond our planet,” says Lee. “The Vatican must not be silent. It must lead. And that begins with transparency, courage, and preparation.”
A LIBRARY GUARDED BY SILENCE
The Vatican Secret Archives remain one of the world’s most tightly controlled collections of knowledge. Researchers who manage to gain the rare privilege of access are only allowed to request three specific items per day—a remarkable requirement considering nobody truly knows what’s inside. These fortunate few can bring only pen and paper, are accompanied by two priests and two guards throughout their visit, and face strict time limitations.
What’s more, nothing in the Secret Archives is indexed—Catholic law actually forbids it—and browsing is strictly prohibited. The only person with unrestricted access is believed to be the Pope himself, who technically owns the Archives.
For those brave scholars granted limited entry, “there are entire sections that are strictly forbidden” according to reports. This level of secrecy has naturally bred intense speculation about what might be hidden within.
UFO CONNECTIONS AND COVER-UPS
Lee isn’t alone in his suspicions. The Holy See has faced accusations of “working with the US government” to conceal UFO evidence—claims that gained momentum after Pentagon whistleblower allegations that the Vatican assisted in covering up a 1930s Italian UFO crash.
As someone who studies the connections between religion and alien phenomena, Lee insists these archives may contain centuries-old sightings. “If the Church is truly committed to spiritual truth and human enlightenment,” he urges, “then it must no longer suppress information that could fundamentally reshape our understanding of our place in the cosmos.”
This call for transparency gains additional weight in light of explosive 2023 testimony by David Grusch, a former intelligence official who claimed the U.S. possesses recovered alien craft. When asked directly if the government had UFOs, Grusch stated: “Absolutely, based on interviewing over 40 witnesses over four years… I know the exact locations.” He also alleged a violent cover-up, claiming whistleblowers faced “brutal retaliation.”
THE ASTRONOMICAL CONNECTION
Lee calls on Pope Leo to acknowledge the Church’s historical involvement in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, particularly through the Vatican Observatory—one of the oldest astronomical research institutions in the world.
“The previous Pope Leo laid the groundwork by opening the Church to the stars—literally—with the founding of the Vatican Observatory,” Lee explains. “Now, this new Pope Leo has a chance to finish what was started—by releasing the truth.”
Interestingly, the Vatican’s commitment to astronomy is physically connected to its secrets—if you were visiting the Vatican’s Tower of the Winds (the first astronomy tower, built in 1578), you’d pass right through the Secret Archives. The only way to the Tower is through these forbidden archives.
ANCIENT ALIENS AND RELIGIOUS TEXTS
Some of the most provocative speculations concern what might be hidden in the Vatican’s most restricted collections. Many have claimed the Vatican Secret Library contains proof that aliens visited Earth, “likely seeding our planet with life and providing carefully crafted guidelines (religions) in order to ensure peaceful development.” One account mentions, “A friend of mine used to work at the Vatican translating. She was a nun. Because of what she read, she ain’t a nun anymore.”
The rumored evidence includes the physical remains of an extraterrestrial being—a claim sometimes given as the reason the Holy See constructed its astronomy observatory directly above the Secret Archives.
Lee suggests there could be even more profound implications. “What people are seeing in the sky could be genuine extraterrestrial UFOs, but there’s also most likely going to be secret military technology years ahead of what we think they’ve got.”
He also proposes a reinterpretation of religious texts: what if ancient religious accounts actually describe misunderstood UFO encounters? This theory aligns with claims that among the Vatican’s records may be the true Third Secret of Fatima—a controversial revelation allegedly received by the Virgin Mary in 1917 and partially suppressed by the Church.
“For decades, there have been rumors and insider testimonies suggesting that the real Third Secret of Fatima deals not with war or apostasy, but with the arrival of non-human intelligences and their role in humanity’s future,” says Lee. “If this is true—and I believe it is—the world has a right to know.”
SHOULD THE POPE RELEASE THE COSMIC TRUTH?
For Lee, the case for disclosure is clear. He believes the Vatican has a crucial moral and spiritual role in preparing humanity for an unprecedented shift in our understanding of reality. He argues that disclosure is not just a scientific or political matter but a deeply spiritual event that will transform our understanding of creation, the soul, and our place in the cosmos.
“If first contact happens—and it might be very soon—people will be asking profound questions: What does this mean for God? For Jesus? For salvation? The Church must be ready to provide answers that unite rather than divide, that heal rather than fracture. Pope Leo can be the leader who rises to this historic occasion.”
“I think the public deserves to know,” Lee insists. “We don’t need to be protected from this information.”
But skeptics point to the Pentagon’s firm denials. Defense Department spokeswoman Sue Gough stated that investigators found no “verifiable information to substantiate claims that any programs regarding the possession or reverse-engineering of extraterrestrial materials have existed.”
Still, given the Vatican’s historical role as a keeper of knowledge spanning millennia, the question remains: if the Church does possess knowledge of otherworldly visitors, does it have a spiritual obligation to share this cosmic revelation with humanity? Or are there some truths for which the world is not yet ready?
“It’s time to stop treating this like science fiction,” Lee concludes. “This is science fact—and it’s spiritual truth. We must embrace it together. The future is already here.”
