MYSTERIOUS LEVIATHAN: First-Ever Footage of Living Colossal Squid
From the deep, a juvenile colossal squid emerges on film – the first of its kind ever captured alive in the mysterious Atlantic darkness. (VIDEO BELOW)
In the inky darkness of the deep Atlantic, a creature of legend has finally revealed itself to human eyes. Scientists on a 35-day expedition near the South Sandwich Islands have captured what experts are now confirming as the first-ever footage of a living colossal squid – a mysterious behemoth that has haunted maritime folklore for centuries.
While adult colossal squids can grow to nightmare-inducing proportions of 14 meters (about 46 feet) in length and weigh over 500kg (1,100 pounds), this particular specimen is merely a juvenile, measuring a modest 30cm. Yet its significance cannot be overstated. Filmed approximately 600 meters beneath the churning surface waves, this elusive phantom of the deep wasn’t even initially recognized by the researchers who captured it on camera.
Only later, when marine biologists analyzed the footage, did they realize the monumental importance of what they had stumbled upon. The Natural History Museum has described this rare glimpse as “straddling the line between legend and reality” – perhaps one of the most important underwater recordings in years.
So little is known about these gargantuan cephalopods that scientists cannot even estimate their population. They exist as whispers in the scientific community, rarely encountered and poorly understood. This juvenile, barely visible in the murky depths, represents a crucial piece in understanding one of the ocean’s most enigmatic predators.
