THE TRUE CRIME CASE THIS STORY IS BASED ON: On the evening of March 7, 1866, the body of an unknown man was discovered with a gunshot wound to the head at the corner of 100th Street and 2nd Avenue in New York City, a remote area at the time. The large amount of powder around the wound indicated a close-range shot. The man, around 30 years old and fashionably dressed, was found with $15 in his pocket, ruling out robbery as a motive. The crime scene featured an eight-foot embankment and a small stream, where the body lay amidst wagon tracks and men’s footprints. A Colt Navy revolver was found at the scene, but it was fully loaded and unfired, discounting suicide. It was believed the man was killed elsewhere and his body dumped to avoid detection. Despite a coroner’s inquest confirming murder and a $500 reward from the mayor for information, neither the man nor his killers were ever identified.
