A Wisconsin judge has scheduled an April hearing to determine whether Morgan Geyser, one of two teenagers who stabbed a classmate in 2014 to please the fictional horror character Slender Man, should be released from a psychiatric hospital.

Geyser, now 21, petitioned the court for conditional release from the Winnebago Mental Health Institute, where she has been for the past 7 years. She made a similar request in 2022 but withdrew it two months later.

Geyser and her co-defendant Anissa Weier were 12 when they lured sixth-grade classmate Payton Leutner to a park and stabbed her 19 times, leaving her for dead. Leutner miraculously survived after crawling to a bike path where she was found. Geyser and Weier claimed they attacked Leutner to earn the right to become proxies of Slender Man.

In plea deals, Geyser pleaded guilty to attempted first-degree intentional homicide, while Weier pleaded to attempted second-degree homicide. Both were found to have mental illnesses and sent to psychiatric care. Weier earned conditional release to her father’s home in 2021 with GPS monitoring.

At Monday’s hearing on Geyser’s request, the judge appointed psychiatric experts to evaluate her current mental state. He scheduled an April hearing to review the reports and potentially rule on release. Geyser appeared via video and quietly acknowledged the judge.

The experts’ assessments and judge’s ultimate decision will determine if 7 years of psychiatric treatment has made Geyser fit to reenter society. The attempted murder due to apparent Slender Man delusions made international headlines in 2014.
